globalCom - Iridium Short Burst Data
Short Burst Data is a proprietary network protocol that allows for small bursts of data to be transferred efficiently and cost-effectively over the Iridium network. This is ideal for applications that require frequent transactions, such a vehicle tracking, equipment and process monitoring, banking etc. Again, the benefit is in that Iridium has truly global coverage, meaning that you can take your business anywhere on the globe.
Short Burst Data is essentially billed for the amount of data sent, however these is a minimum charge per message. Messages are sent from the subscriber in email or IP format to the Iridium SBD messaging centre from where it is forwarded to LBT in the field. The LBT is configured to send messages back to an email or IP address of the subscriber's choice, from where the data can be further processed.
The new Iridium 9601 and 9602 Short Burst Data (SBD) Transceivers are designed to be integrated into a wireless data application with other hardware and software to produce a full solution designed for a specific application or vertical market. Examples of these solutions include a tracking a maritime vessel or automatic vehicle location.
