It is important to note that data communications on the Inmarsat network is charged per megabyte (MB) of data sent and/or received. There is also a network overhead of around 15% that will further stretch your communications budget. To further complicate this problem, Microsoft software such as Outlook or Internet Explorer is not exactly written to optimize bandwidth usage, and the architecture of the internet and email systems in general often allows for a misuse of bandwidth. Add to these the enormous SPAM problem we most know all too well, and you’ll find your precious Inmarsat airtime eaten up before you know it!
This is why Inmarsat and its partners have been working very hard to devise ways and develop solutions to bring this situation under control. Comprehensive and extensive firewall technology and services have been installed to offer general protection from unwanted incoming internet traffic and viruses. These can, upon request, be configured to further restrict both incoming and outgoing traffic on any given SIM card to, for example, allow only email traffic to and from the subscriber’s terminal. Simply ask your account manager for assistance in this regard.

Furthermore, globalCom supplies -free of charge- a proprietary email client "AMOS Connect" to replace outlook. Amos Connect dials into servers in the Inmarsat Land-Earth Station to enable email compression of up to 90% (depending on the nature of your email and attachments), resulting in a significant decrease in the amount of airtime used to do your business as usual. The Amos Connect server even includes a free-of-charge email hosting service that, during installation of the software, gives every user a new Amos Connect email address – a much better alternative to using your existing email address or even web mail.

In addition globalCom also offers access to the "Easy Accelerator" proxy server (via internet explorer) for compressed and enhanced web browsing. Using the "Easy Accelerator" service is as easy an entering a proxy server address into the "Connections" tab in Internet Explorer, and once again enables a significant cost saving for internet browsing. Lastly, when using your satellite modem, do ensure to disable things like automatic Windows Updates and in fact any other automatic updates for programs you may have installed on your computer, as these can consume large amounts of data at great cost.
