FRED - Find and Report Emergency Device

FRED is a light-weight hand-held device utilising Iridium Short Burst Data (SBD) communications and GPS for positioning. The device has been designed for users in a hostile environment to alert the appropriate authorities of an emergency. The device is rugged and has a colour display to allow user interaction. Via the simple menu structure a user can send and receive pre-set messages, define the device parameters and monitor the status. The device can be configured by the user or over the air via the control centre. In hostile areas there are frequent dangers to individuals and teams as well as to high value goods. Often the communications infrastructure is limited and unreliable. Duty of care to personnel is a major consideration to organisations with personnel in these environments.

In today's market there are many GPS enabled Iridium devices. Many make assumptions on the communications infrastructure and its availability, relying on GSM or other methods of data transmission and give limited feedback to the user. GPS data together with the most appropriate communications mechanism is widely regarded as the most appropriate method for alerting responders to where assistance is required.
